Digital Music Couldn't Exist Without the Fourier Transform
The Fourier transform was—perhaps unsurprisingly—developed by the mathematician Baron Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Fourier and published in his 1822 book, The Analytical Theory of Heat. The Baron was interested in the way heat flowed inside and around materials, and in the process of studying this phenomenon he derived his transform. At the time, he wouldn’t have realized just how important a contribution he was making—not just to math and physics, but science, engineering and technology as a whole.

Direct Numerical Simulation of a rising, hot thermal plume. Left panel shows temperature, right panel enstrophy (a quantity related to the swirl of the fluid).
GauGAN: Changing Sketches into Photorealistic Masterpieces
A deep learning model developed by NVIDIA Research turns rough doodles into highly realistic scenes using generative adversarial networks (GANs). Dubbed GauGAN, the tool is like a smart paintbrush, converting segmentation maps into lifelike images.

Upcoming Podcast
Friday Episode
Coming Friday at 6pm CET, I will release a new podcast with David Movitz who has a passion for leadership, problem solving and teamwork. While studying at the University of Iowa, he founded the Iowa Formula racing team, a student organization that designs, manufactures, and races an electric formula race car for international competitions. As Team Principal, he grew the team to over 50 members and led them to compete within their first year, an accomplishment few teams have achieved.
Topic: Building A Formula Student Team 🏎️

Planned: Podcast with Aidan Wimshurst
I will interview Aidan from FluidMechanics101 in a few weeks and we are gathering some questions for the podcast related to Computational Fluid Dynamics, his PhD work, turbulence and other things that you think are interesting.
Went Live This Week
A new podcast with Alex Castillo went live this week! Alex Castillo who was a Software Engineer at Netflix and left to pursue his dream to build Neurosity. He is very passionate about the human brain and how we can use technology to understand it better. Neurosity is reimagining brain-computer interfaces and neuro-powered applications.
